Priceless A Rylee Adamson Novel Book 1 edition by Shannon Mayer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I absolutely love strong, kick-ass heroines... and Rylee Adamson is no exception. Ever since she lost her sister due to mysterious circumstances at a young age, her supernatural abilities have come "online" and she has the rare ability to Track. When children go missing and the authorities don't have any leads, the parents of these children frequently seek Rylee out as a last resort. Armed with only a photograph and a name, she can find them -- dead or alive.

The supernatural world of witches, werewolves, orcs, trolls, harpies, vampires, and unicorns is definitely memorable and highly entertaining. I loved seeing the different approach to all of these creatures and Rylee's unusual place in the world. The characters were a lot of fun and many of them endearing (Giselle, Alex, and even our irksome FBI agent). The first book in this series has a lot of promise and I'm anxious to follow along to see how the rest of the series develops.

The story itself was very good... my only issues was that the world-building and characters could have used some more development. I would have liked to have seen the story and characters fleshed out a little bit more so we could get more into Rylee's head and really experience her emotions. I'm writing this review after I've already read the second book (and onto the third)... and I will say that the author's writing has improved since the first one. I'm anxious to see how it further evolves in the later books.

On a side note, there's a little bit of romantic tension... and a little bit of romance in the next book. However, I don't think writing romance or intimate scenes is this author's strong suit. It's the characters relationships and the story itself that really shines and sucks the readers into the world.

Overall, I do recommend this book to fans of Paranormal, Supernatural, and Urban Fantasy. It's a pretty quick, fast read... and if you're like me, you'll immediately pick up the second book in the series. You really can't go wrong. Now... I'm off to go read more about Rylee and her (mis)adventures.

This review was originally posted on The Novel Lady Book Blog.
I recently read this Author's Celtic series, and was not overly impressed. It wasn't bad, but the lack of editing and the choppiness of the writing impaired the reading enjoyment. I noticed some other reviews in that series mentioned this Rylee series as being superior, and they were correct.

There are still some proofreading errors, but nowhere near as many. The characters, the storyline, and the World Building is much better in this book. They are also longer in length than the Celtic series books. Although I also have a prequel to this Rylee series, I decided to read this one first just to see if it was worthwhile. It was.

I like this Heroine. I like the Supernaturals in this World. And the dialogue and the plot moves along more naturally than in her previous series. This one didn't end in a cliffhanger, simply with a teaser to lead into the next book. I will now read the prequel to get a little more background into the Heroine's previous years.

This series, for me, is worth continuing.
So my hubby walked in last night to find me laying on the floor of the living room laughing over my . If that isn't the sign of a good book, I don't know what is.

Priceless is the perfect blend of everything I like in a book--a kick-ass heroine, intriguing mystery, an assortment of paranormal creatures, well-timed comic relief and a red hot lust/hate relationship.

Rylee is my kind of heroine. She has supernatural talent, yet is fallibly human. I like that things don't always go her way...well ever. But whether she is leading high speed car chases running from the law, fighting harpies with her trusty blades or going toe-to-toe with magic wielding kidnappers, she's somehow able to maintain her softness--or maybe a better word is compassion. After having been abandoned first by her biological parents and again by her adoptive parents, Rylee knows what it's like to be alone in the world. As a result, she has dedicated her whole life to helping those in need. It goes deeper than just rescuing missing children; she is like a beacon to those in need. This adds a surprising amount of emotional depth to the story.

Regular readers of my reviews know I'm all about the love story. My favorites are those that are able to balance lust, affection and antagonism. The relationship between Rylee and Agent O'Shea has all of these elements. Our first introduction to O'Shea is as the FBI agent who has been trying for ten years to prove Rylee murdered her little sister. She didn't do it, but O'Shea is too haunted by the unsolved case to see past his prejudice against Rylee. When the tables turn and he is forced to place his trust in her, O'Shea finds everything he has even known about the world turned upside down. I loved the way the author handled this relationship. There is no insta-love here, more like a slow burn. This is a love story that is meant to roll out over the course of a series, not wrap up with a nice tight bow at the end of the book. I am so excited to see what happens with this couple.

One of the other strengths of this book is the use of humor. The dark subject matter and gruesomeness of this story could have caused the book to be too heavy. Witty dialog and Rylee's sidekick, Alex the werewolf, keep the book from taking itself too seriously. Remember my husband walking in on me laughing at my ? Yeah, that was Alex.

About the only character that I didn't like was Rylee's best friend Milly. She's a witch--literally. Even though the two are as close as sisters, she dumps Rylee because her Coven doesn't want her to associate with people outside their group. (This isn't really a spoiler. It happens right at the beginning of the book.) I found Milly to be weak and annoying. Her efforts to redeem herself at the end of the book fell flat with me. I assume as the series goes on Milly will either develop a spine or do something so stupid Rylee will sick Alex on her.

All in all, Priceless is an amazing start to a fun new urban fantasy series. I can't wait to see where this is going!
