BACKGROUND"Hothouse Orchid" is an installment in the "Stone Barrington" family of novels, featuring many returning characters---particularly the two most interesting characters in the series, Holly Barker and Teddy Faye. "Hothouse Orchid" can be read on its own, but is really for Holly Barker fans who have read Orchid Beach, Orchid blues, Blood Orchid, Reckless Abandon, and Iron Orchid.
SETUP
In "Hothouse Orchid" CIA Agent, former Army Military Policewoman, Holly Barker is taking a vacation in Orchid Beach, Florida where her father lives, and where, coincidentally, she was the former Chief of Police.
Coincidentally, the new Chief of Police is James Bruno who was Holly's commanding officer in the military police, and who attempted to rape her
Coincidentally, Holly's friend, Lauren Cade, who Bruno did succeed in raping when both were in the Army, is, now a Florida State policewoman coincidentally assigned to the Vero Beach area
Coincidentally, fugitive rogue serial-killer CIA agent Teddy Faye has just moved into the community. Albeit in disguise as an old man, Faye in effect dated Holly previously.
Coincidentally Faye begins dating Lauren. (How likely is it that a fugitive would date a police officer?) And Faye has the brass gonads to accept an invitation (with Lauren) to dinner at Holly's home. (How likely does that sound?).
A series of occasional rapes turns into daily murders. And naturally, Holly and Lauren suspect Bruno and vigorously investigate him--even though there is no evidence beyond their animosity toward him. That's the setup.
CRITIQUE
The plot of "Hothouse Orchid" is contrived and filled with implausibilities. As in all Stuart Wood novels, the portrayal of interpersonal relationships are very weak. Teddy's role is little more than extended cameo which adds nothing to the novel. Holly is the only reasonably 3-dimensional character--but that is mostly because we know her from earlier novels. As is typical of Stuart Wood novels, there is no feeling at all for the Vero Beach area. Nevertheless, the book is fun, and a treat for Holly Barker fans. Teddy Faye fans will be disappointed.

Love Holly Barker but this was wasn't up to snuff with the others. Yes, I would recommend to others but wasn't as good as usual.
Will see catch Teddy? I hope Holly and Teddy end up working together and
D her finding out he is good
Nice book with Holly as the main character. Love a great mystery!
Stuart Woods used to be my favorite author. His earlier works like White Cargo, Chiefs, Palendrome, etc. are classic and excellent. His Holly Barker series started off strong, and now each book is a carbon copy of the previous books. I read the first half of the book, thinking I had read it before. I like repeating characters within a series, but there is nothing new with Holly Barker, except a new boyfriend, who is predictably in love with her. The plot was weak with few surprises, What happened to the old Stuart Woods?
We need more Holly Barker. Was looking forward to this really launching here career but it ended right here. Disappointed that Stuart woods doesn't write faster. The Holly Teddy thing really had my interest.
Holly has become a living, breathing person through the pages of Woods' books. However, as much as I like her, there is a point in life when coincidence is too much. The fact that her Army nemesis shows up in her home town, and that the doctor she is seeing is already a CIA candidate are just two of the concepts that make this book too cliché. I think it is time for Holly to start focusing on international intrigue, which is really the focus for the CIA anyway, right?
Loved the return of Teddy, and he saves the day too! Being a woman, rape murders aren't high on my reading list, but this book had enough of Holly and Teddy, as well as a new love interest for Holly to make it all work. Looking forward to more.
All of the Stuart Woods books have provided me with a great deal of entertainment. Each is different but weaves in many of the same characters as they age and go through their lives. Some of the lesser characters recur here and there, making each book more interesting. Read them in order to keep up with the movement. Thoroughly enjoyable with many plots about places and matters that I otherwise might not have been overly interested in until reading them in these books. I keep tied for more from Mr. Woods.
