I am a longtime reader of Steven L. Kent, having read his Clone series. When I saw this co-authored book slated for publication I jumped on it, and I was not disappointed. What an exciting and horrifying book. I read this one in basically two sittings. Perfect read for a chilly night in front of a fireplace or on Halloween - Nicholas Sansbury Smith

100 Fathoms Below Steven L Kent Nicholas Kaufmann 9781538507636 Books Reviews

The suspense about made me crazy at times. I wanted to read faster to find out what was going to happen. This had surprises at many turns. I'll be looking for other books by this author.
Wasn't sure where this was going when I first started reading, but was pleasantly surprised at the twists and how the authors battled the forces at work on the sub. Thanks for an entertaining book!
Best vampire book Ive read in awhile. Hopefully the author will keep exploring his world. Who is the green eyed queen and what is her plan?
I don't know much about submarines but the book offered enough information so I wasn't lost. The story jumped to action early on and maintained the pace all the way through. I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that a sub was an interesting and fresh setting for this genre. I was lucky enough to have some down time while traveling because I didn't want to put the book down. The author gave me the chills in a couple of scenes with the vivid description of terror, so I was glad I read it during the day surrounded by lots of space and people, because I felt claustrophobia described.
It is a vampire book but the kind I enjoy, the romantic sparkling kind I can do without. I have never entertained the concept of vampires on a submarine which makes for an unusual and interesting read.
I loved this book. Vampires loose on a submarine, if you are a vampire fan, what's not to love about that? Good mostly likable characters stuck on a ship that can't surface for three months, as shipmates disappear one by one. And Russian subs & ships lurking around & above the vampire infested ship only ups the ante.
If you are a vampire or horror fan, give it a try!
I admit, I wasn't excited at first. Vampires? Haven't they been done to death? But though I haven't read any of Kent's work before, I've read and enjoyed all of Kaufmann's other novels, so I figured I'd give it a try. Glad now that I did. For an inventive writer, there's always something new to be done with an old trope. And fortunately, there are no tortured Byronic souls or sparkly emo vampires here - these creatures are purely monstrous predators.

In 100 Fathoms Below, the atmosphere of fear and claustrophobia is beautifully evoked. As a landlubber myself, I can't vouch for the accuracy of Kent & Kaufmann's depiction of the submarine and its procedures and jargon, but it certainly seems authentic and convincing. The characters are deftly drawn - even those who, like the crusty ship's captain might at first seem to have been sent up from central casting will reveal their own unique aspects. The story starts at a fairly moderate pace, but the tension builds quickly, and once the real action starts, the pace never lets up, confronting the protagonists with further problems, injuries and horrors at every point. Don't start reading this at night if you need to get up for work in the morning, because it won't let you go until the very last page.

(There's also a new and original twist on the vampire mythology, which I won't describe, because spoilers.)

With the crew trapped in close quarters beneath the waves away from the sun, unable to surface, communications to the outside cut off, and being preyed on by nightmare monsters, 100 Fathoms Below will appeal to fans of the film Alien, Niles & Templesmith's 30 Days of Night, or Dan Foley's Intruder.
