Ngaio Marsh (1985-1982) was one of the four “Queens of Crime” (the others being Marjorie Allingham, Agatha Christie, and Dorothy L. Sayers) who largely defined the 20th Century English murder mystery. All her mystery novels feature Inspector Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard, and the 1935 ENTER A MURDERER is his second appearance. The novel also marks the first appearance of a character that will eventually be known as “Br’er Fox,” Alleyn’s most trusted assistant.Although she is now best recalled as an author, Marsh was also a professional stage actress and director, and ENTER A MURDERER is set against the theatrical world that she knew so well. Reporter Nigel Bathgate has received two tickets for a popular stage thriller playing at The Unicorn Theatre, a play titled The Rat and the Badger. He invites Alleyn to join him for the performance—and pretense becomes fact when an actor is murdered.
In Marsh’s first novel, A MAN LAY DEAD, Alleyn was a cardboardish figure, and most of the novel followed Bathgate. In ENTER A MURDERER, however, Alleyn is much more developed and completely in charge, and the result is much more satisfying. The people who work at the theatre, and the atmosphere of the theatre itself, is also memorably developed. This is still not Marsh at her best, but it is easy to see how rapidly her confidence as a writer has improved, and although the book takes a few mis-turns, it is a fascinating read. Recommended.

Love the theatre ones... this is one of the shorter, early books, a nice and neat mystery. Includes Nigel Bathgate (journalist, young man, occasional sidekick).
"Enter a Murderer" is the second in Ngaio Marsh's "Inspector Allyen" series. You may want to read the first book, "A Man Lay Dead", before this one as one of the first book's character, Nigel Bathgate, plays a significant role in book # 2 but it is not necessary to do so. The book is about a murder involving a theater group. All characters well developed and a suspenseful plot. Highly recommend.
Am working my way through Ngaio Marsh's Roderick Alleyn series picking up ones I hadn't previously read.
Insp. Alleyn and his friend, Nigel Bathgate attend the theater in ENTER A MURDERER and have front row seats for the crime. The mystery play produces a real murder, but who killed actor Arthur Subonadier during the performance is a mystery that leaves both men shaking their heads.
A well crafted police detective novel that will keep you reading through some rather long scenes that add little to the story.
Good read.

i love all of Ngaio Marsh's books as well as the BBC's Mystery series based on her books. She introduces her characters briefly, at the same time giving the reader/listener insight into individual personality. When the obnoxious actor is murdered, the reader goes with Inspector Alleyn through suspect interviews and background checks. Ms. Marsh weaves her facts into and interesting story filled with interesting characters.
Having read these quite some while ago I decided to read them again after these many years but in absolute sequence. Thus, this is the second book in a long series. As such it has Marsh's keen eye for character development and a plot that unfolds gradually. Perhaps because it was such an early book it is not as riveting as I recall. Still, it is reliably entertaining.
Ngaio Marsh is especially interesting when she is dealing with actors,, and this early tale is rife with them.
Alleyn is his usual insightful self, but shows the early, somewhat whimsical side of his character in this
theater-centered mystery. He even allows himself some momentary interest in a female character.
(This is quite some time before Troy enters the picture, so it's OK!) Alleyn's entrapment of an extremely
bold and clever murderer has cliff-hanger moments, but he Gets his Man (or was it a woman?)
Not her best, but Ngaio Marsh is an excellent writer and plotter. Her characters are interesting and Roderick Alleyn is the best detective of this genre in my opinion - Same period as Peter Wimsey - but a man and unlike Dorothy Sayers, Marsh writes the story doesn't begin it with the most boring rehash of a coroner's inquest. A college professor got me started on these years ago because I was a theatre/English major and like this novel, Marsh often has her murders theater related.
